Bedding plants and annual plants, are plants which are grown for lots of seasonal colour. Bedding plants are frost tender and usually only last for one season. They will need replacing when they die off. Bedding plants are perfect for growing in the front of borders, in patio pots, window boxes and hanging baskets.
During the spring you can expect to find annual plants such as pansies and violas in cell packs, aubretia, primroses, polyanthus, bellis as well as a selection of bulbs already growing in pots. Daffodils, snowdrops and tulips are typically available until around May. From May onwards the bedding plant selection becomes a riot of colour. Lobelia, petunias, begonias, bacopa, and geraniums all become available and ready to be planted in window boxes and hanging baskets.
Violas and pansies are great for pots, basket and window boxes.
Plants for the Autumn / Winter
From October you will find a good selection of Pansies and Violas. They come in a cell pack of six plug plants and are very affordable. Pansies and Violas are very versatile bedding plants and can be grown in the sun or shade in pots, window boxes, hanging baskets, or in the border. All they need is too be kept moist and dead head them regularly. They happily flower from October into the spring. Annual Cyclamen are a great bedding plant for adding a splash of colour to the garden when everything else seems so grey. They have attractive flowers that are scented and usually available in shades of red, pink, and white. Blooms are also very attractive to bumble bees seeking out some much needed nectar before the cold weather arrives. Their heart shaped leaves often have silver markings. Heathers are technically a dwarf shrub but are often used as a bedding plant. They enjoy full sun or part shade and benefit from being planted into an acidic compost. The stay in bloom most of the winter. Trim back when the blooms fade. Heather look particularly good in window boxes when planted along with violas. Winter flowering bedding plants are often planted in pots along with small perennial plants to create mixed plantings. Evergreen perennials such as Heuchera, Lamium, Sage, Ivy, Grasses, and Ferns all complement the bedding plants available. It is also a good idea to plant spring flowering bulbs in the bottom of the pot.
